October is Filipino American History Month, which celebrates the contributions of one of the largest Asian groups in the country.

Since the 1960s, favourable U.S. immigration policies brought waves of migrants from the Philippines. In Hawaii, Filipinos make up the majority of new immigrants to the U.S.

A new film Yellow Rose follows the story of a headstrong Filipino teenager from a small Texas town who fights to pursue her dreams as a country music star while facing the threat of deportation. Released by Sony Pictures, the modern American musical drama debuted in U.S. theatres this weekend.

The film’s writer and director Diane Paragas joined Good Morning Hawaii to talk about the movie’s theme during a time of heightened anti-immigrant sentiment.
