LOS ANGELES, USA – “It’s a major coup twice over for Philippine cinema on the world stage,” Filipino screenwriter Gil Quito said of Mike de Leon: Self-Portrait of a Filipino Filmmaker, a month-long retrospective now running through November 30 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
“It’s the first ever MoMA retrospective devoted to a Philippine filmmaker,” said Gil (via email), who co-wrote with Clodualdo del Mundo Jr. Itim, one of Mike’s obras being screened at one of the world’s leading and most influential modern art museums. “Not only that, but it’s also the first ever MoMA retrospective devoted to a Philippine studio.”
