Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 27) — Senator Manny Pacquiao has filed a bill seeking to rename the Metro Manila Film Festival to the “Philippine Film Festival”. He said the previous title conveys “exclusiveness” of the celebration to the country’s capital.

“[D]espite MMFF’s commitments to enrich Philippine culture, to deepen our awareness of our historical heritage and traditional values, and to refurbish native arts, the event’s nomenclature depicts exclusivity,” Senate Bill No. 2017 stated.

The MMFF is an annual event that showcases various Filipino movies from Dec. 25 until the first week of January. When it was created in 1975 through Proclamation No. 1949, it was then named the Metropolitan Film Festival. The event is led by an executive committee, headed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman and composed of members of the film industry.
